How the World Cup 2026 knockout bracket works

For the first time the World Cup has 48 teams, so the knockout stage opens with a Round of 32 instead of a Round of 16. The top two from each of the 12 groups advance automatically, joined by the eight best third-placed teams — 32 sides in all. From there it's straight knockout: Round of 32 → Round of 16 → quarter-finals → semi-finals → the final on Sunday 19 July at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, with a third-place play-off the day before. Any tie level after 90 minutes goes to extra time and, if needed, penalties.

This bracket reads from the live match feed, so as each result lands the winner moves into the next round automatically. Slots still to be decided show which match feeds them (for example “R32 3”). Open any match for our rating-based win projection (a model estimate, not betting odds), each team's last five results, their recent head-to-head meetings, and confirmed line-ups once they're released about an hour before kickoff.
